The Forgotten Generations

Lest We Forget Project

Our digital requirements are that all digital resources from the project must be accessible to all.

Educational materials accompanying The Forgotten Generations – Lest We Forget project

These are divided into three categories.

1. Documentaries

  • The History of the Royal Air Force since 1918
  • Caribbean Airmen of the RAF (covering the Royal Air Force`s recruitment and treatment of black veterans since 1918)

They are designed to give teachers, educators and youth and community leaders essential historical academic knowledge as background to the different periods in which
individual veterans served. Extracts from the documentaries might also be used with children, but they have been produced with an adult audience in mind.

The full documentaries can be accessed below:

2. Interviews

Filmed interviews with seven local black RAF veterans of the West Midlands, the first of whom trained in 1944 and the last of whom retired in 2011. These films have also been divided into segments which display individual questions put to each veteran and their replies to them. Relevant documentary segments have also been included. It is
essential that all interview segments for intended use with children should be viewed by the adult showing the segments before they are shown. Some contain accounts of
racist treatment which are not appropriate for use with primary age children.

Documentary and film interviews segments, along with a brief biography of each veteran can be accessed here.

3. Stories

Stories about each veteran presented in a PowerPoint with each section of the story included in the notes for each slide of accompanying images. These were written by Andrew Wrenn, Teacher Fellow of the Historical Association to be used with primary age children in mind but could also be used with older children, for example those in a special educational setting. The stories could be used in the teaching of primary history in schools, for Black History Month and with voluntary associations and community organisations such as scouts and guides, cadets and faith youth groups.

Click on the photographs of the veterans below to download each story (the text of each story can be found in the notes section of individual PowerPoint slides).
